Understanding the Periodic Table's Layout
Why Elements Are Arranged This Way
The periodic table orders elements by increasing atomic number โ the number of protons in the nucleus โ arranged so that elements with similar chemical behavior line up in the same vertical column, called a group. Elements in the same row, or period, have the same number of electron shells.
Reading an Element's Details
Every element cell shows its atomic number, symbol, and atomic mass at a glance. Clicking through to the detail panel reveals its full electron configuration, category, and physical state at room temperature โ everything needed for a typical chemistry assignment in one place.
The Lanthanides and Actinides
The two rows displayed below the main table โ the lanthanides (57โ71) and actinides (89โ103) โ technically belong within period 6 and period 7 respectively, in group 3. They're pulled out into separate rows purely to keep the table a manageable width; their position in the sequence of atomic numbers is unchanged.
Electron Configuration Shorthand
Rather than writing out every subshell from scratch, configurations here use noble-gas shorthand โ for example, Chlorine is written [Ne] 3sยฒ 3pโต instead of the full 1sยฒ 2sยฒ 2pโถ 3sยฒ 3pโต, referencing the last noble gas that precedes it.

Element Categories Explained
Alkali metals and alkaline earth metals sit on the far left and react vigorously with water. Transition metals fill the central block. Metalloids straddle the line between metal and nonmetal. Halogens and noble gases occupy the far right, ranging from highly reactive to almost entirely inert.
A Note on the Newest Elements
Elements 113 through 118 were only formally named in 2016 and exist only as a handful of laboratory-synthesized atoms with extremely short half-lives โ their listed properties, including physical state, are based on theoretical prediction rather than direct observation.
